What artificial intelligence means for your child, when it is age-appropriate, and how to keep it safe and useful.

Artificial intelligence has gone from a niche topic to something every parent hears about weekly. It is natural to wonder what, if anything, your child should be doing with it. The short answer: AI is worth introducing thoughtfully, but it sits on top of coding foundations rather than replacing them.

What "AI for kids" actually means

For children, AI learning is rarely about building models from scratch. It usually means understanding how AI works in plain terms, using friendly AI tools to create images, music or stories, and learning to think critically about what AI produces. The goal is confident, responsible users and curious young makers, not junior data scientists.

When is a child ready?

  • Under 10: keep it light and supervised. Simple, playful tools with an adult alongside are plenty.
  • 10 and up: a good age to explore how AI works and to use tools purposefully, ideally after some coding basics like Scratch.
  • Teens: ready for deeper projects, including a little Python, and honest conversations about limits, bias and misuse.

Keeping it safe

  • Use age-appropriate, reputable tools, and check a platform's minimum age.
  • Keep young children supervised, and talk about not sharing personal information.
  • Teach that AI can be confidently wrong. Checking and questioning answers is part of the skill.

How it fits with coding

AI is most valuable once a child understands basic coding logic. Scratch and a little Python give the foundation to move from using AI tools to understanding and eventually building with them. Many Singapore schools now fold AI workshops into their wider coding and robotics programmes.
