How to choose a coding school

Six things that actually matter when you are deciding, and the questions to ask before you enrol. No jargon, no sales pitch.

Match the programme to your child, not the hype

A five year old does not need Python. Look for age-appropriate content: visual, block-based coding and robotics for young children, text-based languages only when reading and logic are ready. A good school will steer you honestly.

Ask about class size and who teaches

Small groups mean more attention. Ask how many children per class, whether the same teacher stays with the group, and what the teacher background is. Continuity matters more than a fancy syllabus.

Always take a trial

Watch whether your child is engaged and building something they are proud of, not just following steps. A trial tells you more than any brochure. Ask whether the trial fee is offset if you enrol.

Understand the full cost

Compare like for like: fee per hour, registration fees, material or device costs, and whether it is a term commitment or pay as you go. Ask about make-up classes and refund policy before you commit.

Check location and format honestly

A centre near home or school is easier to sustain than one across the island. If you are considering online classes, make sure they are live and interactive, not just recorded videos.

Look for real projects, not just badges

The best sign of learning is a child who can show you a game, app, website or robot they made and explain how it works. Ask to see examples of what students produce.
